Eyeliner for hooded eyes: why standard tutorials fail

On hooded eyes, the skin of the brow bone folds over part of the mobile lid. Two practical consequences follow: liner drawn on the lid vanishes behind the hood when your eyes are open, and whatever sits on the lid can print onto the hood above it. Standard tutorials fail because they assume visible lid space you may not have. Different geometry needs different technique, and hooded lids are extremely common. If you are not sure hooded is the right word for your eye, the eye shape chart sorts it out in three questions.

On this page

Strategy 1: keep the line thin and tight

The thicker the line, the more of it the hood swallows. A thin line as close to the lashes as possible, or tightlining, which fills the space between lash roots, defines the eye without spending your limited visible lid on liner. Gel formulas and fine pen tips work best here. Our tightlining guide covers the technique in detail, including the difference between the lash line and the waterline, which matters for eye health.

Strategy 2: the batwing, drawn with the eye open

  1. Look straight into the mirror with eyes open, not stretched closed. All mapping happens in this position.
  2. Draw the wing where you want it to appear with the eye open, even if that means the line sits partly on the hood rather than the lid.
  3. Close the shape. When you shut your eye you will see a gap, the "bat wing" notch, in the line. Fill it with the eye closed.
  4. Open again and check. The wing should now read as one continuous line in the mirror. That is the only view that matters.
Why a standard wing vanishes on a hooded eye and how the batwing fixes it Left: a hooded eye with a wing drawn along the lid while the eye was closed; with the eye open, the fold swallows most of the line and only a stub shows. Right: the same eye with the wing mapped with the eye open, so the line sits partly on the fold and reads continuous. Drawn closed: the fold swallows it Mapped open: the batwing The wing was drawn on the lid with the eye shut. Open, the hood covers it, so only a stub shows at the corner. Draw the wing where it should show with the eye open, even on the fold. The notch you see closed is filled last.
The only view that matters is the open one. A wing drawn on the closed lid lands under the fold. Drawing it with the eye open puts part of it on the fold, which looks wrong closed and right open.

If you have not built a standard wing before, the angle rule in the winged eyeliner guide still applies: extend the line of your lower lashes, and travel outward rather than steeply up.

Strategy 3: fight transfer with formula, not willpower

Format matters more for hooded eyes than for any other eye shape. Gel pots and fine liquid pens top the shortlists, and we have re-ranked the picks specifically against hooded-lid criteria in best eyeliner for hooded eyes. The finder also weighs hooded lids into its recommendation.

Questions people actually ask

Why does my eyeliner disappear when I open my eyes?

The fold covers the part of the lid you drew on. Keep the line tight to the lashes and map the wing with the eye open, not closed.

What exactly is a batwing?

A wing drawn where it should look right with the eye open, which leaves a notch when the eye closes. You fill the notch closed, and the line reads continuous when open.

Why does liner print onto the fold?

Contact plus an unset formula. Prime or powder the lid, use a film-forming product, and hold the eye open while it dries. If it keeps happening, work through the smudge diagnosis.

Is hooded the same as mature or as monolid?

No. Hooded means a fold sits over the lid, which can happen at any age. A monolid has no crease at all, and needs more height rather than less. Mature and crepey lids are a third thing again: that is about surface texture rather than geometry, and the two often arrive together.

Should I skip eyeliner on the lower lash line?

Not necessarily, but keep it to the outer third. A full circuit of liner makes a hooded eye look smaller and heavier.
