Best eyeliner for hooded eyes
The short answer
On hooded lids the failure mode is not a wobbly line, it is a line that prints onto the fold or disappears behind it. So buy for transfer resistance and set speed first, precision second.
If you want one product: a waterproof liquid pen, applied thin and tight to the lashes and allowed to dry with the eye held open. If you prefer control over convenience: a film-forming gel pot with a short angled brush.
How this list is made: we compile shortlists from published product specifications, full ingredient lists and aggregated customer ratings across major retailers. We do not run lab tests and we say so. Retailer links on this page may earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Products are chosen before retailers are attached, never the other way around. Full disclosure.
What a hooded lid actually needs
A hooded eye has a fold of brow-bone skin resting over part of the mobile lid. Two consequences drive every choice on this page, and both are covered in more detail in our guide to eyeliner for hooded eyes.
- Contact. The fold touches the lid. Anything that has not set will print upward, which is why the most common complaint is a mirror-image line on the hood.
- Concealment. Lid space is limited, so thickness is wasted and often invisible. The line has to earn its keep close to the lashes.
That gives four buying criteria, in order: sets to a dry film, resists transfer, low shine, and a tip firm enough to work in a narrow strip. Note that a super-fine brush tip, the thing most roundups lead with, is fourth at best here.
The shortlist
| Pick | Best for | Why it suits a hooded lid | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stila Stay All Day Waterproof | Overall | The reference waterproof liquid pen: dense black, fine felt tip, and a formula with a long track record for staying where it is put across a very large review base. | Prestige price band. The tip softens with heavy use, so cap it firmly. |
| NYX Epic Ink | Budget | Brush-flex tip that can lay a hair-thin line tight to the lashes, at a price that makes practising painless. Vegan formula, enormous review base. | Batch variability is the recurring complaint. Buy from a retailer with easy returns. |
| Maybelline Tattoo Studio gel pot | Control on a budget | Film-forming gel, so it dries down rather than staying tacky. A pot lets you take the tiniest amount, which is exactly what a narrow lid strip needs. | Buy an angled brush separately. The pot dries out if left open. |
| Benefit They're Real Xtreme Precision | Gel wear without a brush | Gel-style wear in a guided pen tip. A good compromise if you want gel longevity but do not want to learn brush control. | Premium price for a small quantity. |
| Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On | Tightlining and smoking out | Soft enough to pack between lash roots, then sets firmer than most pencils. The right tool for the tightline-plus-smudge approach that suits hooded lids. | Sets fast, so blend within seconds. Set it with powder if your lids run oily. |
| Catrice Kohl Kajal Waterproof | Cheapest way to test the technique | Soft waterproof kohl at pocket-money prices, useful for learning whether tightlining suits you before spending more. | Soft core wears down quickly. Limited shade range. |
These are the same products as our main shortlists by format, filtered and re-ordered against the hooded-lid criteria above rather than a fresh set of names. If a product is right, it is right on both pages.
The product is half the job
No formula survives being applied thickly to a hooded lid and then blinked. The application rules matter as much as the purchase:
- Lift the lid from the brow bone, do not stretch it sideways.
- Keep the line tight to the lash line and thin along the inner two thirds.
- Put whatever weight you want at the outer corner, travelling outward rather than upward.
- Hold the eye open for a slow ten count before you blink. This single step prevents most transfer.
- Set a pencil line with a matching matte powder.
If transfer keeps happening despite all of that, work through why your eyeliner smudges, which diagnoses the cause by where the product ends up.
Where to buy
Prices in this category move constantly and sales are frequent, so it is worth comparing two retailers before buying. Stock varies by region: the two US-based liners above are widely available domestically, while the European brands are easiest to find through UK and international beauty retailers. Each link opens that retailer's eyeliner section.

Questions people actually ask
What kind of eyeliner is best for hooded eyes?
A film-forming formula that sets quickly and resists transfer. Waterproof liquid pens and long-wear gels beat soft pencils here, and a dry finish matters more than a fine tip.
Liquid or pencil?
Liquid or gel for a defined line that stays put. Pencil for tightlining and smoked looks, but set it with powder or expect it on the hood.
Does waterproof mean it will not transfer?
No. Waterproof covers water and tears, not oil or friction. Look for film-forming, transfer-resistant or long-wear wording as well. Our waterproof versus smudge-proof guide explains the difference.
Is a wing possible on hooded eyes?
Yes, drawn with the eye open and travelling outward rather than up. The winged eyeliner guide covers the angle, and the hooded-eyes guide covers the batwing variation that stays visible when the eye opens.
